The SPF in your
foundation is lying.
That "SPF 30" printed on your foundation bottle? In real-world use, you're getting closer to SPF 3. Here's why the number is technically true and practically useless.
How SPF is actually measured.
To earn an SPF rating, a lab applies 2 milligrams of product per square centimeter of skin — the FDA/ISO 24444 standard. That works out to roughly a quarter-teaspoon of foundation for your face alone. Nobody wears foundation like that. Most people apply about 0.5–1 mg/cm², which is 25–50% of the tested dose.
Why less product ≠ proportionally less protection.
SPF doesn't scale linearly with thickness — it scales exponentially. Cutting your application in half doesn't give you half the SPF. Peer-reviewed studies (Faurschou & Wulf, 2007) showed that applying 25% of the tested amount gives you roughly the fourth root of the labeled SPF. Do the math on SPF 30 at a real-world dose:
- Full test dose (2 mg/cm²) → SPF 30
- Half dose (1 mg/cm²) → ~SPF 5.5
- Quarter dose (0.5 mg/cm²) → ~SPF 2.3
Foundation was never designed to be sunscreen.
The pigments and emollients in a foundation don't hold UV filters evenly across the skin the way a dedicated sunscreen does — it pools in pores, migrates into fine lines, and rubs off on hands and phones within an hour. Even if you did apply a quarter-teaspoon of foundation to your face, you'd still miss the UVA-heavy long wavelengths that most foundations don't filter.
What actually works.
Apply a dedicated broad-spectrum SPF 30+ underneath your foundation — two finger-lengths for the face and neck. Let it set for 90 seconds, then apply makeup on top. Any SPF in the foundation is a bonus, not the plan. Reapply every 2 hours with a mineral powder or a mist if you're outside.
